The wonderful thing about working with plastics is that there are a plethora of options to choose from, each with their own set of characteristics, abilities, composition, durability, price range, and other characteristics. There are many different types of plastics available, from plastics that are as hard as metal, to plastics that are designed to flex when properly molded, such as living hinges. Taken from this diverse range of plastics, let's take a closer look at one of the most commonly encountered types of plastic: ABS plastic, and why it can be found in everything from drain pipes to LEGO bricks.
The type of ABS Plastic Molds that are appropriate for purchase, as well as the materials from which they are constructed, should be determined by their primary use and application, as well as the amount of money that is available to invest in them. At EX MOULD, we have discovered that high-impact, industrial ABS plastic is the most suitable material for our purposes and the requirements of approximately 97% of our customers. They have a long life expectancy at a low cost, while providing and maintaining true duplication from the master mold for the entire mold's useful lifetime. Our molds are referred to as a low-cost alternative to high-priced rubber molds in the industry.
Why Do We Use ABS Plasic for Concrete Molds or Mold Making
In spite of the fact that rubber molds will last longer, their high cost makes them unaffordable for all but the most high volume commercial casters, as well as concrete and plaster casters who want to duplicate items that have undercuts in their originals... such as most three-dimensional figures, statues, sharp edged items, and so on. Essentially, the increased yield from a rubber mold comes at the expense of the mold itself, which is extremely expensive when compared to other options. While starting out in the concrete and plaster casting business, our commercial customers can acquire more molds for less money up front by using our ABS plastic molds. This allows them to offer their customers a greater variety of products. As for our DIY, consumer, and trades customers, they typically only require a yield of 50 to 100+ pours from a mold for their projects, so there is no reason to pay the high cost of a rubber mold that may only yield 300 or so pieces for their projects. It's primarily a question of economics and the application of targeted use in this situation. The question that always comes to mind is: why pay for something that will last five times longer than is actually required when there is a more cost-effective alternative that is more closely tailored to your requirements. To paraphrase an old handyman proverb, choose the appropriate tool for the job at hand.
The pattern does not wear out as quickly as it does with some rubber mold compounds, which is another advantage of ABS Plastic. Our Injection Mold retain their ability to pick up a design from the first pour to the hundredth pour and beyond, even after repeated use. Rubber suffers more damage than ABS plastic due to the heat generated by concrete curing and abrasion from concrete aggregates, as well as the chemical reaction caused by the cement, which is highly alkaline. Rubber is more susceptible to heat and abrasion than ABS plastic. In addition, ABS is not affected by ultraviolet light in the same way that polystyrene or some rubbers are.
ABS – full name Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – is a polymer that is typically opaque in appearance. It is a copolymer of the three distinct monomer molecules in its name, just like all other polymers are. This combination results in a flexible and lightweight plastic that is both thermoplastic and impact-resistant, and it can be tailored to have different properties depending on the application. ABS plastic for injection molding is a popular choice because it is simple to machine and can be used in almost any field where parts are manufactured.
In China, EX MOULD CO., LIMITED is a leading injection mold manufacturer, specializing in high-quality custom ABS plastic injection molds.
